Hurricanes Isaac and Sandy Lash Haiti in 2012

Two major hurricanes devastated parts of Haiti in 2012 — Hurricane Isaac in August, followed in November by Hurricane Sandy. Fr Jean François Printemps’ parish of Sibert was worst hit during the August storm. River banks gave way and flood waters surged through the poorest section of the parish forcing over a 1000 people, including Oblates, to take refuge in the two-storey Oblate school.

From lagoon to paddy fields

For years, soil erosion — caused by loss of forest cover on Central Java’s mountain slopes — has been flushing fertile top-soil down to river basins and coastal lagoons, destroying the livelihoods of fishermen. Today, Fr Charlie Burrows is busy turning disaster into opportunity for the fishermen of Segara Anakan lagoon who have seen their lagoon fill up with mud and silt.

Centre delivers babies to 80 mothers in first six months

The communities of Yaoleka/Opala, deep in DRC’s tropical forest, opened their new Health & Maternity Centre with communal celebrations on February 19th last. From toddlers to elders, they came to join Oblate Provincial, Fr Habell for the blessing of the new facility. It was eloquent testimony to the importance people attach to the project.

Solar panels in Lahore

Power downtimes are normal in Pakistan where the national grid supplies for about 12 hours daily. Summer temperatures in Lahore rise to over 40°C, so one can imagine the difficult conditions for living and learning at the City’s Oblate house of studies. Students and staff rely on candles, oil lamps and torches for much of the time.

Teacher training in Lahore

In July, 3 specialists in education and maths (from UK, US & RSA) and a professor from Lesotho’s National University ran a 3-day in-service workshop for 50 maths and science teachers from Maseru high schools. The focus was on child-centred learning, peer-learning and improvisation in contexts where there are few teaching aids available.
